Media must promote our youth, nationally and internationally rather than glamour and consumerism, says Abid H K Sherwani
The Department of Social Sciences and Humanities organized a media seminar on ethics, ownership and media policy. Habib Akram, Anchor Person, Dunya TV, and Mian Saif-ur-Rehman, recently retired as Editor Reporting from The News, Lahore, were the guests. The seminar started with the recitation from some verses of the Holy Quran.
Addressing to the audience, Habib Akram said that it is a general perception that the media is spreading anarchy in society but the reality is totally different. He said that the Pakistani Media is actually playing its role as watchdog of society. He added that the media provides platform to everyone who claims that they have potential to prove but sometimes it goes good and sometimes media gets nothing. He more adds that ethics is just like selling a product in every profession of society.

Mian Saif-ur-Rehman, Ex-Editor Reporting, the News, Lahore, said that the media has economic problems and because of that the complete truth does not come out sometime but most of the time the truth comes out. Speaking to the students he said that if you move in right direction, then no one can use you as a tool.
Abid H K Sherwani, Director External Affairs, UMT, said that the media must encourage Pakistani young talent nationally and internationally. He said that the media is full of glamor which is being used to sell the products but it is very unfortunate that in spite of the potential of Pakistani youth, the media is not providing them a platform to encourage their talent which is unethical.
At the end, Dr Abdul Hameed, Dean, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, thanked the guest speakers and added that media professionals should not only keep national interest at the forefront but should try to stop mis-perception and controversies about the Pakistan. He said media professionals should have clear policy of their profession and they should not sell their loyalty at any cost. He added that it is the media’s responsibility not to publish any news without authenticity. Talking to the students, he said that your minds, objectives and skills should reflect pride in your identity.
A large number of students and those interested in the issue turned up to attend the seminar. The question and answer session was very interactive and thought provoking.
