The Academic Development Center (ADC) and Office of Human Resources (OHR) organized a seminar on ‘Quality PhD Supervision’ in the UMT Central Board Room. All the PhD faculty members were participants of this seminar. University Professor and Advisor (UP&A) Dr Abdul Raouf, SI, was the facilitator of this session.
Explaining the objectives of the seminar, Dr Raouf said that it is designed to provide awareness about the fundamentals of PhD supervision, roles and responsibilities of supervisors, scholars and departments, and important values of being a supervisor. He also outlined the underlying principles of the relationship between a supervisor and scholar, and guided the participants on monitoring and reporting progress of a PhD Scholar based on a specific criterion. Dr Raouf said that the purpose of organizing this seminar is to enhance the performance of faculty regarding PhD supervision. He reminded everyone that students and scholars are our products and these products must be worthwhile with good skills and knowledge and that is only possible if we ourselves are capable of imparting such knowledge to them.
Dr Raouf discussed the supervision value model and explained its eight operational roles (innovator, broker, producer, director, coordinator, monitor, facilitator and mentor). He emphasized that a PhD supervisor should be an integrator, critical observer and reflective learner who selects the most appropriate of the eight operational roles. He also discussed the responsibilities of departments offering PhD programs. He described the three styles of PhD supervision, and the paradigm shift from PhD supervision to a good PhD supervision. Dr Abdul Raouf concluded the seminar by giving a glimpse of PhD supervision effectiveness.
