The Punjab Protection of Women against Violence Act 2016: Issues and Challenges

Department of Gender Studies at the School of Advanced Studies (SAS) organized a seminar titled “The Punjab Protection of Women against Violence Act 2016: Issues and Challenges” on December 20, 2016 at University of the Management and Technology Lahore.
The worthy panelists of the seminar were Mrs Azma Zahid Bokhari (Chairperson, Standing Committee on Law and Parliamentary Affairs MPA, Punjab Assembly), Dr. Sarah Shahid (Director, Women Institute of Leadership and Learning, HoD, Department of Gender Studies, Lahore College for Women University, Lahore), Mr. Salman Abid (Regional Director, Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO)).
Seminar started with the recitation of the Quran. Welcome note was addressed by Ms. Ambreen Salah ud din (In-charge, Department of Gender Studies). Dr Elisabeta Zelinka, (Assistant Professor, Department of English Language and Literature) said that Islam has given a distinctive identity to women so don’t try to judge east on the behalf of the west and west on the behalf of east.
On this occasion, Mr. Salman Abid highlighted the importance of legislation and an attitude to understand that legislation implementation for society betterment. He said that it is a challenge to translate legislation of violence act in the society due to its controversial presentation of facts in religious debates and electronic media. He suggested that translation of legislation would be improved by reducing the gaps between the academicians and practitioners.
Dr. Sarah Shahid shared the psychological perspectives of domestic violence. She talked on the existing loopholes in our society that are causing increase in violence. She messaged the audience that try to learn the respect of each other as human should do.
Mrs. Azma Zahid Bokhari shed light on the key features of the violence act 2016, in which it is the responsibility of the state to protect women including psychological, economical and domestic violence, stocking and other cyber crimes. She shared the steps that were taken to implement this act. She highlighted the need of more consolidated reform, actions, enhancement of moral values to shape better society.
Dr. Abdul Hameed (Dean, School of Advanced Studies (SAS) and School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSS&H), UMT) gives a vote of appreciation to the faculty of Department of Gender Studies to organize this semianr and worthy panelist for sharing their enlightening view on the said agenda. He said that it is just a myth that protection of women act 2016 is a western agenda. It is our responsibility as nation to ensure dialogues among ulamas, policymakers and Academicians.
The session was followed by an interactive question and answer session. In the end UMT souvenirs were presented to worthy guests and certificates to students of DGS
