The University of Management and Technology (UMT), Lahore, held the 1st Doctoral Conference at the University campus on Saturday, December 7, 2013. The conference was organized by the Center for Graduate Research at UMT Dr Hasan Murad School of Management.
Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad, Rector UMT, delivered the keynote speech. Prof Dr Niaz A Bhutto from Sukkur IBA shared post-doc degree experiences while Prof Dr Sarwar Azhar, Director CGR-UMT, gave the welcome note.
In his insightful address to the gathering of scholars, researchers, senior faculty members and students, Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad said that research contributes to both social and economic development. As such universities have a large role to play in terms of building strong industry-academia linkages that effectively lead to knowledge economies. This assumes greater significance in a developing country such as Pakistan. Dr Hasan advised the young scholars to focus on their area of expertise and conduct research that has beneficial value for the society at large.

In his concluding address, Dr A R Kausar, world renowned professor of knowledge management and Director, Institute of Applied Sciences at UMT, expressed hope that the conference would pave the way for future efforts in this direction.
Earlier, Dr Sarwar Azhar welcomed all the presenters and said that this conference has been organized solely to give a platform to MPhil/PhD students to showcase their research and prepare them for participating in national and international conferences.
An initiative of Dr Hasan Murad School of Management, UMT, this conference has been specifically designed for PhD and MS / MPhil students in Pakistan and abroad. This conference provided the budding scholars a platform where they not only showcased and exchanged their original research work, but also received feedback in a stimulating and support environment. The range of topics presented in the conference comprised of economics, banking, corporate governance, human resource management, Islamic banking, Islamic house finance in Pakistan, and much more. The conference brought together over 50 scholars and researchers on unique models and contemporary research ideas.
