December 19, 2011

Rector UMT Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad urges Muslim statisticians to upgrade expertise for data collection and analysis
The University of Management and Technology (UMT) hosted the 11th Islamic Countries Conference on Statistical Sciences (ICCS-11) at its campus today. Delegates from Algeria, Malaysia, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Australia, Iran, Sudan, Syria, Indonesia, Bangla Desh, South Africa, Uganda, Canada, Egypt, USA, France, Oman and UK are participating in the conference.

Addressing on the occasion, Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad, Rector UMT, welcomed all delegates from Pakistan and abroad to the ICCS-11. He commended the leadership of the Islamic Countries Society of Statistical Sciences for their unwavering commitment to the cause of organizing and networking all statistical professions. Dr Hasan said that statistics has been a strong suit of Muslims throughout history and even today. Islam is all about counting and accounting, forecasting and preparation. Thus, quantitative understanding, analytical tools and statistical sciences are rooted in our faith as Muslims.  He appreciated the efforts of the Islamic Society of Statistical Sciences on the progress that it has made to network all in statistical profession from academia as well as public and private sectors.

Dr Hasan said that the expanding population of the Muslim word is a liability and a blessing as well. The challenge before the Muslim statisticians is to plan ahead for the Muslim Ummah so that this huge human potential is utilized positively for the betterment of the Muslim world.

Dr Hasan took this opportunity to pinpoint two emergent areas that require the attention of Muslim statisticians. First, he said, there is an urgent need to upgrade expertise related to technological tools in vogue today for data collection and analysis.  Secondly, refinement of policy formulation process is required so that it is based on objectivity and analysis rather than political expediency.

Professor Dr Munir Ahmad, Founding President and Patron ISOSS, presented a brief history of the developments of the Society of Statistical Scientists of the Islamic World. Established in 1988, the ISOSS is a symbol of friendship with all statistical societies. He urged the Governments of Islamic countries to pledge financial support to the ISOSS so that the Society further expands the range of its activities throughout the Muslim world.

Prof Dr Shahjahan Khan from University of Southern Queensland, Australia, and President ISOSS, informed everyone that the theme of the conference is Statistics for Strategies in Development. He added that conferences such as this, provide much needed interdisciplinary forum to deliberate state of the art developments in various fields of statistics and its diverse applications.

Dr Ali S Hadi, President Elect ISOSS (2012-13) and Former Vice Provost at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, said that the ICCS includes interesting sessions on various topics ranging from the theory of probability and statistics to the various applications in many fields of knowledge. Dr Hadi also gave the keynote speech on multi-class data exploration using space transformed visualization plots.

Prof Dr M Hanif Mian, Senior Vice President ISOSS, LUMS, also addressed the conference. The ICCS-11 was attended by a large number of educators, statisticians, academics professionals from all walks of life, researchers and students.
