UMT celebrates World Quality Day in collaboration with ASQ
November 28, 2011

The University of Management and Technology (UMT), in collaboration with American Society for Quality (ASQ) observed the World Quality Day with special emphasis on improving our daily and organizational lives by adopting quality principles. Teachings of Deming, Shewhart, Juran and Taguchi, and TQM strategies were highlighted as major contributors to corporate success.

Sohail Qaiser
presented a very informative presentation on the adoption of Kaizen Quality Circles and ‘Just in Time’ approaches which were implemented in their manufacturing facility at Honda. He also described the advantages accruing from the implementation of these techniques.

Yousaf Jamil, Director QEC, emphasized that quality is not just a word but is in fact a commitment. The reason for celebrating the World Quality Day is to join hands to highlight the importance of quality amongst corporate as well as educational sectors of Pakistan.

Irfan Farooqui, Country Counselor, ASQ, emphasized upon the utilization of the ASQ knowledge base for continual improvement in practices. By making quality a global priority, an organizational imperative, and a personal ethic, the ASQ becomes the community for everyone who seeks quality concepts, technology and tools to improve themselves and the world.

Asad Rehman
, CEO, Rehman & Rukan Plastics, correlated the quality of products associated with price. If we reduce the percentage of rejection rates, ultimately our cost of incorporating quality would decrease and we would be more competitive as compared to our competitors, gaining an edge in the market and thus generating profits. He also emphasized that the word ‘learn’ has the word ‘earn’ embedded in it. He asked the students to learn as much as possible to be better managers for the future.

Dr Nasir Saeed Butt, Advisor QEC, IQTM, University of Punjab, explained that quality is part of Islamic teaching. There must be no difference between sayings and actions. He emphasized that quality of education should be enhanced at primary, secondary and higher levels of education. Only then can we can bring change in the quality culture in Pakistan.

At the end, Dr A R Kausar, Pro Rector and Head, Quality Enhancement Cell, UMT, emphasized upon the need to turn the quality aspect into a habit. He also took a pledge from the participants to swallow their egos, save electricity, never cheat, refrain from pilferage activity, and avoid spitting. Dr Kausar explained the aspect of quality by referring to the Great Wall of China; it was not built in one day but constructed over one hundred years by various successive governments who followed one strategy. Therefore, he said, we must plan strategically on a long term basis. The world has shifted from operational excellence to strategic excellence.  Leading organizations are moving ahead by adopting strategic excellence rather than operational excellence.
