Right-based education for all

The Department of Social Sciences (DSS) at UMT organized a one day seminar on “Rights Based Education for All” at the University campus. The seminar was attended by experts on special education, human rights activists and sociologists from various centers of learning including University of the Punjab. These included Dr Abdul Tawwab Khan, Khawar Sultana, Rukhsana Bashir, Nyla Anjum, Hina Fazil, Sumera Jamshed, Khurrum Khan, Faiza Khurrum and Prof Dr Rafiq Tahir. All the speakers discussed their efforts for the promotion of inclusive education and strategies to accommodate children with disabilities in inclusive setups.

Dr Noshaba Hassan, special guest of the seminar, appreciated the efforts of the Department of Social Sciences at UMT to organize a seminar on the crucial issue of rights-based education for all. A doctor of medicine by profession, she has a keen interest in the education of children with disabilities. She said that there is a dire need to bring a positive change in social attitudes towards people with disabilities. She stressed that there must be close interaction between different organizations working in the field of inclusive education.

Justice Amir Raza Khan, chief guest in the first session, highlighted the importance of inclusive practices in Pakistan. He shared the efforts of Amin Maktab in promoting inclusive education in Punjab. He said that organizations working for inclusive education must collaborate with universities at various levels so that an effective mechanism for regular cooperation may be evolved.

Raja Muhammad Anwar, chief guest, emphasized on the importance of imparting education to females. On a special note, he reminded everyone that women have made significant contribution to the educational sector in Pakistan. He condemned the labeling of children with disabilities and recommended these children should be included in the regular school system.

Dr Abdul Hameed, Chairman DSS, gave a detailed presentation regarding the prevalent scenario of inclusive education in Pakistan and stressed on the importance of rights based education for all. His presentation included relevant statistics of children with disabilities in Pakistan. At the end, Dr Hameed also delivered the vote of thanks to all the speakers, guests and the audience for taking the time to participate in the seminar.
